The idea (see §3.4) is to express closed-loop design objectives in terms of re- quirements on an open-loop transfer function (loop gain) and then to shape the latter by an appropriate choice of the controller. The constraints of the loop phase near crossover frequency (stability requirements), however, complicate the loop shaping procedure considerably, especially for systems with RHP poles and zeros and in the MIMO case.
